What is the Mater Prize Home Lottery?
 The
Mater Prize Home Art Union has been operating for the past 47 years. All funds
raised contribute to making little miracles happen for babies and children at
the Mater. There are 9 Art Unions each year with a great variety of prizes on
offer.
Art Unions played an important role from the early days, with the very first Art
Union in the early 1900’s, offering a much sought-after horse and buggy valued
at $100. From the early 1920’s cars began to be offered as the first prize and
were an immediate success.
In 1954 the Mater Art Union changed direction and offered Queensland's first
real estate Art Union – a Mater Prize Home. Like the car lotteries, the Mater
Prize Homes were another immediate success.
The homes became increasingly popular and tickets were sought-after by buyers.
Visiting these prestigious homes, located in new suburbs, became a popular
weekend activity for Queensland families.
Each year members of the Mater Children's Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care
Unit retrieval team travel by plane, helicopter and ambulance to locations fall
over Queensland and in to northern New South Wales to collect children in need
of intensive care and bring them back for expert treatment at Mater. In 2007
there were 266 retrievals and the demand on this important resource continues to
grow.
